Microplastic
Small pelagic fish are one of the main sources of protein for most people living in coastal areas of Sri Lanka. These small pelagic fish are consumed either fresh or dried without the removal of their internal organs. As a result, there is a high likelihood that microplastics could enter the human body through the consumption of these fish. Currently, fresh fish samples (Indian anchovies) collected during different periods from four coastal fishing areas in Sri Lanka are being analyzed for the presence of microplastics. Preliminary results indicate that microfibers of various colors have been found in some of the fish samples.
